Cláudio Carvalhaes is a former shoe shining boy from São Paulo, Brazil. A theologian, liturgist, artist and activist, he is the Associate Professor of Worship at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Author of From the Ends of the World: Prayers in Defiance of Empire (Abingdon Press, August 2020); What Worship Has To Do With It? Interpreting Life Liturgically (Cascade 2018); Editor of Only One is Holy: Liturgy in Postcolonial Lenses (Palgrave, 2015) and Eucharist and Globalization.   1. This is why you are a thoughtful, compassionate professor, theologian and preacher. You engage the text with the world, its pain and sorrow, its anger and injustice, it joy and celebration. If only students would understand that teachers at every level are paet of the helping profession. They want their students to learn and anything that gets in the way is a problem they are willing to help solve. They want them to learn because they know how rich their lives will be and how fully they will know themselves. Viva professors!
