A scholar, teacher and ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Rev. Dr. Stephanie M. Crumpton is committed to healing and wholeness of entire people. Her work on trauma began in 2006 with doctoral research on Black women’s experiences of intimate and cultural violence, which culminated in her first book, “A Womanist Pastoral Theology Against Intimate and Cultural Violence” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). Her current research and forthcoming book focuses on care and support of African American social justice activists and organizers. With over 15 years of experience in the religious academy and in communities, she is the currently the director of the HeartWork Rising Trauma Healing Initiative at McCormick Theological Seminary. Funded by a $1M Pathways Initiative Grant from the Lily Endowment, HeartWork Rising is an extension of work that began with launching the McCormick Theological Seminary Trauma Symposium in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She joined the faculty at McCormick Theological Seminary in 2017 and is the associate professor of practical theology.
