Anna Lännström is professor of philosophy at Stonehill College where she teaches philosophy of religion, Asian philosophies, and ethics, as well as a learning community course which integrates yoga, mindfulness and Indian philosophy. Her writing focuses on mindfulness. Why are we all increasingly stressed, distracted, lonely, and angry? How can techniques like yoga and meditation from the Hindu and Buddhist traditions help us live better lives, and how do we address the ethical challenges involved in borrowing such techniques? She blogs on Medium and Thrive Global.
Holy moly, yes to all of this. This semester has been the worst of my career. At least during lockdown and last fall the tech worked and we were still wearing masks and social distancing. This spring at Northeastern has been hugely challenging, trying to keep the kids who got sick up to date, keep track of who hasn’t given me last month’s assignment yet, not to mention this month’s. I’m asking 2 students to withdraw and there might be a third, hopefully not a fourth. I’ve only ever had one in a semester, or even one in a year. I’m exhausted and counting days to the end of this semester, and I like my job, but oh, I am burning the candle at both ends. And I’m an adjunct.
